Volunteers are being asked to play a greater part in keeping a community cinema and arts centre open.
Three out of the four full-time members of staff at the Scala in Prestatyn have been made redundant as part of a cost-cutting exercise, leaving only manager Chris Bond.
Denbighshire County Council, which part-funds the complex, had warned the management board that the operation had to be more cost-effective if its subsidy was to continue.
Board chairman Rhiannon Hughes said the job losses were regrettable but they had been left with little option.
One result is that the front-of-house service will not operate in the mornings.
A meeting was due to be held on Tuesday in the Scala for existing and new volunteers, but Ms Hughes stressed that volunteers would not be expected to directly replace the redundant staff.
“There are various roles to be filled, and volunteers can play a big part in making visiting the Scala an enjoyable experience,” she said.”“It is a regrettable situation but we have to try to be positive because the cinema and arts centre is such a huge asset to the town. It is open seven days a week and that requires quite a number of volunteers.”“It is a good opportunity for young people to develop their skills and for older volunteers to put their experience and people-skills to good use.”
